About the Event
The C.A.L.M. Approach™ was created by a retired San Antonio police officer with over 27 years on the force in close concert with a 24-year defensive tactics instructor, a Board-certified emergency medicine doctor with decades of experience, and a Board-certified psychologist with nearly 20 years in the field.
C.A.L.M.™ incorporates four basic principles that serve as essential tools for today’s progressive law enforcement agency:
Communication
Active Physical Control Maneuvers
LRR™
Minimization
This approach is designed to provide officers a practical skill set they can exercise when dealing with open, empty-handed force encounters; skills that encompass proper communication strategies, sound decision-making, and lifesaving medical considerations. This methodology underscores the need to avoid physical confrontation whenever possible; however, should such confrontation be unavoidable, this concept provides critical direction to increase the safety of everyone involved, including the subject(s).
Training also includes a newly designed, medically-approved recovery/restraining position, the LRR™. Subject(s) can be placed in this position when they have been involved in a violent physical encounter or are under the influence of a drug. The LRR allows subject(s) to recover more effectively thus increasing survivability while still giving officers a positive control technique.
This 8-hour training encompasses both an interactive classroom portion and a physical, hands-on element. C.A.L.M. certification is achieved upon successful completion of this training.
